However, staying clean "down there" in your personal areas is always something that females wonder about in general. To spare you the red face of having to ask out loud (even though every OB/GYN has heard these things before), here are a few dos and don'ts to keep in mind.
Do: Wear breathable cotton underwear.
Those tiny silky thongs and lacy numbers you wore when you weren't pregnant may have never caused any concern. However, now that you are growing a fetus, the pH balance of your vaginal area can get disrupted fairly easily. Plus, the increased blood flow can mean you will be more prone to chafing if you are wearing panties that are not so delicate and soft. Stick with breathable cotton underwear as much as possible to help keep air flowing to the area and moisture wicked away from your skin.
Don't: Reach for douches or fragrance-infused soaps.
The typical rule is this: it is best not to put anything foreign in or around your vagina during pregnancy. Something as simple as a feminine wash that has fragrance in it can throw things out of whack enough to cause a urinary tract or yeast infection, and these are definitely not things you want to deal with while you are pregnant. Plain old water is the best cleansing agent because it is gentle and free of chemical contaminants.
Do: Be gentle when you clean yourself.
When you are washing your vaginal area, make sure you are using super-soft washcloths and towels that are free of dyes and fragrances leftover from your laundry detergent. If you are using a washcloth that contains heavy dyes, there is a chance of even this causing irritation. Clean yourself gently and make sure you are using a cloth that is gentle on your sensitive areas.
Don't: Soak yourself in the bathtub for long periods.
A nice hot bath in a tub surrounded with your favorite bubbles may be a good way to de-stress while you're pregnant. However, you should keep lengthy bath times to a minimum. Prolonged soaks in the tub leave you steeping in the bacteria that has been washed from your body. Unfortunately, the bacteria can cause infections if they are allowed to slip into the wrong places.
